Since raising more than $1 billion in a Series F funding round, Iceye has moved rapidly to address growing demand for sovereign space capabilities.
In quick succession, the Finnish synthetic aperture radar satellite manufacturer and constellation operator established Iceye Germany, Iceye Portugal, Iceye India, an Iceye technology hub in the Netherlands, a strategic partnership with South Korean satellite operator KT Sat and local leadership for Iceye United Arab Emirates. In addition, Iceye rolled out geospatial intelligence products and announced work with Arianespace to explore the use of Ariane 6 rockets to launch Iceye missions for European government and institutional customers.
Eric Jensen, appointed Iceye global chief operating officer in June, is helping guide the moves alongside Iceye co-founder and CEO Rafal Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila, Iceye co-founder and chief strategy officer.

Shortly before the NovaSpace World Space Business Week conference in Paris, SpaceNews caught up with Jensen to discuss Iceye’s global expansion.
SpaceNews: Over the summer, Iceye announced new or expanded entities in Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, South Korea, India and the UAE. Why is it all happening so fast?
The announcements were close together. However, the strategy behind them was definitely not sudden. We’ve been building local leadership and capability over time. And we’ve been responding to sustained customer demand in these locations where there’s been a clear case for countries developing their homegrown intelligence value chain.
As governments are moving to secure access to intelligence via the ownership and operation of the sovereign systems, our relationships are becoming much deeper, more trusted. They’re not adhering to the traditional supplier-customer model. They involve a lot more local leadership, technical talent, industrial partners, infrastructure. Those are some of the common threads that connect the six markets that we’ve recently announced. We’ve recognized that our ability to move as quickly as the demand is moving is giving us unique insight into their local needs. The best way to respond to those is to indeed have a local presence,
These local presences are not the same.
That’s right. In some cases, we’ve got a prioritization on engineering and research and development, even co-development with the local industrial base. In other markets, we may have a priority focus on local manufacturing and supply-chain capacity. In Germany, for example, we have more of a flavor of satellite componentry and software and AI. While Iceye’s core product roadmap remains common, our ability to tailor the localized components of it is unique.
I’ve heard that sovereign space capability means different things to different people. How do you define it?
Sovereign space capability definitely mean different things in different countries, pursuant to how countries characterize their national priorities. Those are memorialized in their own defense policies, civil policies, intelligence priorities. But in all cases, it remains consistent that the governments are looking to co-invest in their autonomous ability to respond to the environment as they see it. It’s not the case that they only want to adopt commercial products that exist, be it datasets or satellites. They do indeed seem to be favoring the localized version of this related to people, infrastructure, technical expertise, industrial base. They want that to be a symbiotic relationship over time.
We feel that that makes a lot of sense. We learn a lot as a company by partnering with them where they are, not just reading what they’ve expressed publicly as the direction for their policy and budget, but listening intently on the ground, and then responding to it in the way that we see best.
Should we expect more of these sales, engineering and manufacturing entities to pop up around the world?
We are always evaluating opportunities to grow internationally, but I don’t have any other announcements to share at this time.

Iceye executives have talked about producing two satellites per week by the end of 2027. Is that still the plan?
Yes. We’re scaling production because demand is scaling. We’ve entered 2026 with more than 1.5 billion euros in contracted backlog. We’ve raised recently over $1 billion dollars in Series F. We’re deploying that capital right away. We’re not resting on our laurels.
Over more than a decade, we have built vertical integration, particularly around our supply chain and our ability to produce assets at scale in a distributed way. We have a high degree of confidence in our ability to ramp up production. That makes us unique and positions us to respond fast to the demand as we see it.
Most nations are still procuring sovereign capabilities with an assigned value to performance, cost, schedule, risk. The classic approach to procuring anything. We have put our foot on the gas in ensuring that we can answer the call as it relates to the schedule element of it, while delivering high-performing systems at a value that is highly compelling.
So, people don’t want to wait a long time for sovereign capabilities.
No. Our partnership with the Polish government is great example of our responsiveness. We delivered three satellites in about 10 months after signing the initial contract with them. In fact, we had four satellites operational with Polish operators trained to run them independently in less than a year. We’re seeing that experience replicated in the demands that we’re hearing from other customers around the world.
Iceye has also proposed this 1,000-satellite Constellation Europe. Why?
Constellation Europe is a thesis born out of necessity, particularly punctuated by the Ukraine situation. Ukraine showed the world that the lack of sovereign space assets by the nations that wanted to support in an allied way and the inability to co-operate when it came to different types of systems, both on the sensing front and the effecting front. That gap then created instant demand for many commercial capabilities in addition to capabilities offered by these sovereign allies. That gap hasn’t shrunk since the conflict started back in 2022.
What we’ve observed is that as we kind of indicated in the article, Europe has a lot of the building blocks: industrial muscle to deliver complex systems, paired with younger innovative companies like Iceye that are pushing timelines to be smaller and pushing the adoption of technology to be faster. Europe also has national agencies with deep technical expertise. What it still lacks is the acquisition speed and the procurement efficiency. This is not just a European challenge.
Many countries are still grasping with the pace of technological change, especially with respect to space capabilities as the information era transcends to the AI era. The fact that procurement cycles stretch across years and oftentimes define the resultant outcomes is the core pain point to address.
We are advocating Constellation Europe in response to that. The proposal is a federated network of more than 1,000 satellites, which combine different types of assets in different layers, both sensing, data transport, situation awareness and compute. The point of the article is that we wanted to promote the awareness that this is not some far-fetched future vision. We are producing elements of it today.
