A white solid-fueled Chinese Kinetica-1 rocket lifts off vertically from a desert launch pad, producing a large plume of bright orange flame and thick white smoke against a clear blue sky.

China conducted a pair of solid rocket launches late Saturday, seeing the country surpass its previous record for orbital launch attempts in a calendar year.
