Charles Messier was born on June 26, 1730, in Badonviller, France, as the 10th child of court bailiff Nicolas and his wife Françoise. His interest in astronomy grew from witnessing Comet Klinkenberg-Chéseaux in 1744 and the solar eclipse of 1748, leading him to move to Paris in 1751 to work as an assistant at the Naval Observatory.
